  • 100 years ago 28/10/2021

    A wealth of information about Berwick’s history can be found in the accumulating collection of blog posts in the series “Berwick Advertiser – 100 years ago” which is available on the Northumberland Archives website.  A new posting appears every fortnight, and each one contains interesting reports from the newspaper of a century ago, often enhanced by photographs and other illustrations from the Record Office collections. The whole blog collection can be searched by keywords for names or subjects.

  • Archive lectures 23/09/2021

    Northumberland Archives is offering a further series of online evening lectures between October 2021 and March 2022.  In the first of them on Thursday 28 October at 7.00pm Linda Bankier, Berwick Archivist, will speak about “Crime and Punishment in Berwick Archives”, considering the types of records which exist and reveal stories relating to crime and punishment in a small borough on the border with Scotland.

  • Berwick’s history in 4 lectures 03/06/2021

    Berwick Educational Association is presenting a series of 4 online lectures on “Aspects of Berwick’s History through its Archives”, given by Linda Bankier on Tuesday mornings at 10.00am between 8 June and 29 June 2021.  The lectures will be delivered via Zoom.

    Week 1: An introduction to Berwick’s history through its archives. This talk will explore Berwick’s unique history using the archives to tell its story from the late 15th to 21st century .

  • Portrait of a Town 01/06/2021

    A photographic exhibition based on the Photo Centre collection, entitled “Portrait of a Town”, is now open at the Granary Gallery, continuing until 10th October 2021.  It gives a glimpse of the lives of the townspeople of Berwick, captured at work, at play, or in the studio, over the last 60 years.  The Photo Centre in Bridge Street was managed by David and Ian Smith between 2951 and 2012, and its collection of negatives is now held by Berwick Record Office. 

    The exhibition is open Tuesday – Sunday, 11.00am – 4.00pm.  Free tickets for timed admission slots can be booked
