  • Archives at Alnwick Castle 20/03/2022

    Our Spring Lecture, “The Archives of the Duke of Northumberland at Alnwick Castle”, will be given on Friday 25th March 2022 by Christopher Hunwick. He is the archivist at Alnwick Castle where the archive contains the papers of the Percy family and the business papers of the Northumberland Estates, and his talk will highlight material relating to North Northumberland. 

    The event will start at 7.00pm in the Conference Room of the William Elder Building (56-58 Castlegate, Berwick-upon-Tweed, TD15 1JT).  Admission free.

  • History of the Parks 10/02/2022

    On Wednesday 2nd March 2022, a talk on “A history of Berwick’s Castle Parks and Flagstaff Park” will be given by Linda Bankier and Jim Herbert. It will take place in the Parish Centre (Parade) at 7.00pm.  Tickets cost £3.50 in advance from Berwick Visitor Centre (Walkergate), or £4.00 on the door.

    This is one of the winter events organised by the Friends of Castle Parks.

  • Irregular marriages 08/12/2021

    A talk on “Irregular Border Marriages” will be given to Berwick History Society by Linda Bankier on Wednesday 15th December 2021.  It will take place in the Parish Centre (Parade) starting at 7.30pm.

  • 100 years ago 28/10/2021

    A wealth of information about Berwick’s history can be found in the accumulating collection of blog posts in the series “Berwick Advertiser – 100 years ago” which is available on the Northumberland Archives website.  A new posting appears every fortnight, and each one contains interesting reports from the newspaper of a century ago, often enhanced by photographs and other illustrations from the Record Office collections. The whole blog collection can be searched by keywords for names or subjects.

  • Autumn lecture 11/10/2021

    Jane Bowen will speak about “The Voyages of the Paddle Steamer Pegasus, and her wreck off Holy Island in 1843″ for the FBDMA Autumn Lecture on Friday 12th November 2021, at 7.00pm.  The lecture will be given via Zoom.

    Jane has written extensively on local history, including A Poor Little House, her history of the Belford Workhouse, and she is a former secretary of FBDMA.  Her latest book, From Triumph to Tragedy, the Story of the Paddle Steamer Pegasus and her people, 1835-1843, has just been published by Novum (ISBN 978-3-99107-708-4), and it is obtainable from...
