  • Berwick’s history in 4 lectures 03/06/2021

    Berwick Educational Association is presenting a series of 4 online lectures on “Aspects of Berwick’s History through its Archives”, given by Linda Bankier on Tuesday mornings at 10.00am between 8 June and 29 June 2021.  The lectures will be delivered via Zoom.

    Week 1: An introduction to Berwick’s history through its archives. This talk will explore Berwick’s unique history using the archives to tell its story from the late 15th to 21st century .

  • Portrait of a Town 01/06/2021

    A photographic exhibition based on the Photo Centre collection, entitled “Portrait of a Town”, is now open at the Granary Gallery, continuing until 10th October 2021.  It gives a glimpse of the lives of the townspeople of Berwick, captured at work, at play, or in the studio, over the last 60 years.  The Photo Centre in Bridge Street was managed by David and Ian Smith between 2951 and 2012, and its collection of negatives is now held by Berwick Record Office. 

    The exhibition is open Tuesday – Sunday, 11.00am – 4.00pm.  Free tickets for timed admission slots can be booked

  • Museum opening 12/05/2021

    Berwick Museum & Art Gallery re-opens on 19th May 2021.  Initially it will open Wednesday – Saturday, but it is hoped that it may be possible to open on other days during the school holidays.

    One of the attractions which will be on display is the painting “Beach Scene” by L. S. Lowry, which has recently been bought for Museums Northumberland.  There will also be a special exhibition by the artist Jonny Hannah, entitled “Northumberland Folk”, and that will be shown throughout the summer season.

  • Border marriages 19/04/2021

    An online talk entitled “For Better, For Worse: Irregular Border Marriages on the East Coast” is being given by Linda Bankier, Berwick Archivist, on Thursday 29 April 2021, 7.00 – 8.00pm, as part of Northumberland Archives’ series of talks. Linda looks at where these marriages were held, what they involved, and how they came about. She investigates the priests who performed the ceremonies and discusses the records that survive.

  • Lowry in Berwick 12/04/2021

    When Berwick Museum and Art Gallery.re-opens to the public after lockdown, it will be displaying a painting by L.S. Lowry which has been acquired for Museums Northumberland.  “Beach Scene” (c1960) depicts the beach and sand dunes in the former fishing village of Spittal, and it celebrates Lowry’s long history with the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. It was purchased with the support of Art Fund, the Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, and the Guild of Freemen of Berwick, and The Friends of Berwick and District Museum and Archives also made a contribution to the purchase.
