  • War memorial stories 25/10/2018

    An exhibition entitled “Remembering World War One” will be held at St Andrew’s Wallace Green Church on Saturday 3 November 2018, from 10am to 2pm.  It will feature recent research which has been done into the names on war memorials, telling the stories of some of those from the local area who served and and died and the families they left behind.

  • Union Chain Bridge 09/10/2018

    A number of consultation meetings are being held during October 2018 as part of the “Union Chain Bridge: Crossing Borders, Inspiring Communities” project which aims to link the conservation of this important bridge to an extensive programme of activities and events around it.

    In particular, for those with an interest in the local history, archaeology and heritage of the bridge, there is a meeting on Tuesday 23rd October, 2:00-4:00pm, at Berwick Museum and Art Gallery: come along to find out what is being planned and to contribute thoughts and ideas.

  • Cholera comic 03/10/2018

    As part of the Berwick Literary Festival, which takes place on 18th-21st October 2018, Linda Bankier and Jane Miller will talk about using archives as a basis for literature, in “From Cholera to Comic: Using Archives Creatively”.  They will discuss a joint project with Berwick Academy and Newcastle University on the 1832 and 1854 cholera epidemics in Berwick, for which students created a comic on the subject.

    The event is on Friday 19th October, 4:00-5:00pm, in the Holy Trinity Parish Centre, The Parade, Berwick.

  • The Mary Rose 18/09/2018

    TillVAS holds its James IV Memorial Lecture on Sunday 7 October 2018 at 2.30pm.  Dr Alex Hildred, Curator of ‘The Mary Rose’ Trust, will speak on “Henry VIII’s Mary Rose – From Seabed to Showcase”.

    ‘The Mary Rose’ was commissioned by Henry VIII, who recognised England’s need for a standing navy.  The ship was part of the fleet which transported troops to Newcastle prior to the Battle of Flodden, and remained in service until she unexpectedly sunk during the Battle of the Solent in 1545.  Despite several attempts at salvage, she lay on the seabed until archaeological investigation began...
